Now need to get Bismarck's Bell and others as well and do the same have a ceremony for both ships including the Yamanto as well, the largest and biggest battleship ever made. ⚓⚓😢😢🙏🙏😎👌👍✌🦘
I'm an American but I'm proud as hell of the bravery of the Hood's men. They never backed down from a fight.
Despite what most of the world believes. The Bismarck was not sunk by the British Navy. I seen an expedition documentary and they showed all the areas where the torpedoes hit. The outer hole was penetrated but the inner blast shield hole was not penetrated. Proving that the black shields worked and prevented the torpedoes from sinking the ship. Survivors of the Bismarck said they scheduled the ship. I believe them.
Stunning effort by all involved - thank you for saving her for the nation and the freedom loving world.
Slowly becoming the ship of Theseus
Lest we forget .cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 ♥
I'm surprised anything was left. It all looked so rusted through, was it just surface rust ? If it was mostly rusted through how much of the ship was replaced by new steel panels ?
Not a single Fairmile D left now.
Excellent, very interesting. RIP.
I sailed with Bank Line in the 70's - some chinese, but mostly Indian and Bangladeshi crews, One old Serang I sailed with had been torpedoed Twice in the north atlantic in ww2 -- he was quite small and skinny, quite how he survived the cold water I don't know. They were great traders, when they paid off (usually in Calcutta) after a 2 year trip, the indian customs would have a field day, even after the old man had appropriatly bribed them not to be too rapacious.
So, Lord Nelson was OK with a Peach color scheme? Not bloody likely mate.
I have to say this I think this is a massive c**k up. Why is all the art depicting warships of this era showing the traditional yellow ochre not this salmon pink. The carpenters manifest on Victory supports this too.
👌👌👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
👌👌👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
For the crew of rms hood be honored with the bell for protecting both British and American ships. Be honored for memorial day. This video was very moving😢
HMS Repulse & Prince of Wales were dug up off Singaporer and sold for scrap. Like HMS Hood, what counted was who made money out of war.
What ever happened to the MTB that was in an entrance just before the main entrance to the hospital there. As you go down the road it was on the left before Haslar hospital. It was totally unique. Never seen one this shape. She has a rounded front deck to the bow . This was from the superstructure forward. Made of wood planks. It was there for years .Definitely a one off. I have never ever seen another like it.
That sounds like it might have been one of the older boats search British TBs or coastal attack craft.. from 1914 on .
"Down in the Westcountry" Just say "in Devon" , is it so difficult? It's patronising to infer that you're 'up' somewhere superior whilst 'down' there is, rather surprisingly, this interesting thing. And you don't even realise you're doing it.
They are lucky... because another team was gonna get this bell and keep it in private collection. Lucky this team got it first and put it on display.
Make a building round it to prevent weathering !!! its done for concorde and other aircraft
Would love to see a full size documentary about these valiant men in their high powered boats.
Plenty on RUclips - lovely craft!
Honest question here. I thought I read that the USN offered the RN lumber from the USS Constitution's preserved white oak plantation. Do I have that right? There are several ships from around the world that absolutely deserve preservation and it seems to me that all the preservationists should work together to maintain the world's maritime history.
My dad was served on Hms Ekins with the 16th Destroyer Flotilla based at Harwich and used to go out with boats like this every other night hunting E boats and he said it was " hairy"
"Hairy" would be an understatement.,Need a big set to do what they did
Painting yellow stripes on British ships to make enemies think they are cowards before fighting. Just like the Red uniforms to make themselves easy targets. Didn't work out too well in 1776-78. Or in 1812-14 at sea against the US. BTW we still have a ship on active duty that can sail from that second war. Victory is next to helpless hard aground forever.
Think part of the color that was wrong was that it was a blending in tone that came from the fact most of the trim was covered in gold gilt that is now long gone. The old orange was not orginal but at a distance looked like the gold was still covering the trim.
Pretty building that was once a ship. Sealed forever in the land and top mast removed. A former ship can never sail again is no longer a ship. If you want to see an old ship of sail check out the Active service USS Constitution when they take her out to turn around. Only a few years younger and still sailing.
The masts have been removed because of the ongoing refit, they will be back. As for Constitution still sailing, well, she was never involved in any big fleet actions like Trafalgar. Victory took a big pounding in that battle. but still managed to sail to Gibraltar, and after some repairs sail back to the UK. Victory was a 1st Rate ship of the line, Constitution was a heavy frigate, if it were a Royal Navy ship it would not be allowed anywhere near these battles. Victory is 30 years older than Constitution, fighting the biggest ships afloat at that time, Constitution only ever fought much smaller 5th and 6th rated RN ships You shouldn't be comparing these two ships. You should try learning about the differences between them, and their different roles, and not be sneering at Victory, she is a remarkable battleship, deserving respect. You should read the first comment in this comment section, it is from a retired US Navy Chief Warrant Officer, if that gentleman can show respect, so should a no nothing keyboard warrior like you. Sad person.
@@daneelolivaw602 I respect what it once was and the Constitution though on a smaller scale did indeed fight in fleet actions including the Barbary Wars that we lost one sister ship. She also fought in the war of 1812. While our fleet was small compared to England's until close to our own civil war it packed a punch. The British even had standing orders to never engage any US frigate without at least two larger ships. They used a new tech in design that gave it a thicker haul, resistant to cannon shot above any prior ship and a huge advantage in maneuverability. This advancement was nearly equal to England's standardization of guns that we inherited. The fact she no longer floats, while preserving the wood from rot warps her over time due to the lack of designed pressures on the haul. It may be cheaper but it robs her of what she was. Even flooding her cage with a clean water mix would be better. They also want to enclose her farther with a roof like the remains of the Mary Rose that would deny her of her topmast forever. In the founding of the colonies some ships were converted to houses and some like Victory were converted into waterfront buildings or piers by beaching them on soft ground, once they were no longer afloat or able to be floated they stopped calling them ships.
@@charlesmaurer6214 The Constitution did not fight in any wars with ships as big as the 1st , 2nd or even 3rd rates of Britain, France, or Spain. The standing orders that you mention were for RN Frigates ONLY, Not ships of the Line, Constitution was almost twice the size, and more heavily armed than any RN Frigate. You mention Hull thickness, on Constitution it is 21-22 inches, on Victory it is 24 inches. We will never know if Constitution could resist a 32p cannon ball, because none of the RN ships she fought carried 32 pounder guns, one had 32 pound carronades, but these were not much use at any distance over point blank range. I don't know where you get "They want to enclose her farther with a roof", well, that's news to me, i visit the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth five or six times a year, and i have never heard of any plans to enclose Victory, Her Masts, spars and rigging will be back, any enclosures on Victory are temporary, purely to help with the refit, Can i suggest you contact the National Museum of the Royal Navy with your ideas about what is best for our wonderful ship, i am sure they would appreciate your knowledge.
English weather......put a glass house on!
Yes, this was a very popular vessel that took passengers on wonderful sea voyages during the summer months in Devon..
She is still an impressive ship by today’s standards. Massive in size
Just a building, she no longee can sail so no longer a ship but a shaddow of one long gone.
Brilliant video thank you 👍
Why isn't the ship kept inside a building? Surly it would increase its longevity immensely.
Excellent!!! I'm a professional model maker, I'm about to build a model of her. This is the reason I clicked on this video. As the quizzical comment said about model ships around the world now being the wrong color..... HA HA HA I think that's hilarious. The replica ship Endeavour in Australia said these are the correct colors. I'm so thankful I found that video, (on her launch the true colors were discused.) Thank you
Great, thank you!!! //Lars
Were there any coins under the mast? A naval tradition was to put a coin under the mast where ot sat on the keelson, and it'd be interested to see what was there! (I couldn't tell, even with the good resolution of this vid.) When was the main mast in this vid oroginally stepped? It couldn't be original, right? (At the least, the main mast was pretty well shot up at Trafalgar, if I recall correctly.) Very interesting vid, btw!

This is wonderful to see. Given the abhorrence of modern societies' obsession with cancel culture and demolishing as many "British," things they can, the preservation of icons of Great Britain's history has never been so important, and HMS Victory is definitely iconic. 🙌 👌🇬🇧🇬🇧
i love yall people on the internet desperately trying to pretend yall are opressed or something lol cancel culture man? cmon
salt soaking into the wood of the hull from the seawater would have helped prevent fungus from taking hold.
Where is Britannic?
I understand the only original part on the Flying Scotsman engine is the name plate. Is this the same for HMS Victory?
What an insult, french Oak on a 18th century British warship, Nelson would turn in his grave.
'True colours', my foot!!
This ship is an important part of Britain history . When they ruled the waves
A pink Victory, bravo Lincoln University, Bravo - Slow handclap.
I've been on the Victory a couple of times and the tour is always interesting. However, it would be more interesting if they had put a little information in the video about how the mast was originally installed and how masts were repaired after storm or battle damage. BTW- the USS Constitution " Old Ironsides" though not quite as old as Victory is still afloat and commissioned in the US Navy.
Riggers- also referred to as the "R" word.
What a task! Well done. Imagine these ship of the line after an engagement, clearing the deck, rigging replacement while injured, short-handed, and most likely in bad sea conditions. Amazing!
A portrait of Nelson hung at the wall over my bed in youthtime, after I had the chance, to get on bord as a pupil... Hornblower books 50 times at least, building Victory and Bounty as huge scale RC-models (Mizzen Mast 1,80 m:, 70 kg weight to put inside :) Years later I was honoured, to become godfather of a half british girl... Guess, what she was taught... from my view , her parents made the best possible choice among Germans here, and I felt her grandparents in heaven smiling, filled up with pride, love and joy. She became a sailor... Love To GB :) And thank you for the giant investigations into Victory`s future. The restaured parts look simply fantastic.
Wow! Hats off, whether athwartships or fore & aft, to all involved. 🌟👍
I imagine in time the Victory will be like Triggers brush... from... Only fools and horse's TV show.
Like those Spitfires that had hit the deck at 250mph 80 years ago and are 'restored' to flying condition within 6 months.
What will they do with the old planks?
